South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has temporarily withdrawn from public engagements after falling ill, with his medical team advising him to rest and recover.

The Presidency confirmed the development on Wednesday, saying Ramaphosa had been booked off from public engagements due to ill health.

Ramaphosa returned to South Africa on Monday after attending the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi, India. The Presidency said he was subsequently advised by his doctors to take time to recover.

Where possible, the President has asked relevant ministers to represent him at scheduled public events while he rests.

The Presidency did not provide details about the nature of his illness or state how long he is expected to remain away from public duties.

The development comes as Deputy President Paul Mashatile is also resting on medical advice following a recent medical procedure.

Despite his temporary absence from public engagements, Ramaphosa’s office said arrangements had been made for ministers to stand in for him at engagements where necessary.
