Claudio Ranieri has been appointed as Roma’s head coach until the end of the season, six months after he announced his retirement.
In addition to coaching, Ranieri will advise the club’s owners and assist in the search for a permanent manager.
At the season’s close, the 73-year-old will “transition into a senior executive role,” according to a statement from the club.
Ranieri, who previously managed Roma twice, including a short spell in 2019, had retired in May after helping Cagliari avoid relegation.
His appointment follows the sacking of Ivan Juric on Sunday.
Juric, a Croatian manager, lasted only 12 games after succeeding Daniele De Rossi, who had managed the team for eight months following Jose Mourinho’s departure in January.
Ranieri has managed 18 clubs over his 37-year career, as well as the Greece national team.
The pinnacle of his career was Leicester City’s Premier League title in 2015-16.
Roma had reportedly considered former Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini, who recently stepped down as Saudi Arabia’s head coach.
Despite spending over £80 million in the summer transfer window, Roma currently sit 12th in Serie A with 13 points after 12 games and are ranked 20th in the Europa League with five points from four matches.
Roma’s next Serie A game is against Napoli on November 24.
