Redeemed Church suspends two pastors amid homosexuality allegations

In response to allegations of homosexuality, the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) has announced the suspension of two ministers: Pastor Ayorinde AdeBello and Deacon Oke Mayowa.

This information is outlined in an internal memo dated October 28, 2024, signed by the RCCG National Overseer, Pastor Sunday Akande.

Pastor Akande notified the church’s Special Assistant to the General Overseer on Administration of the decision to temporarily relieve the accused ministers of their duties while an investigation is conducted.

In the memo, Pastor Akande emphasized RCCG’s dedication to upholding biblical principles.

“Our mission is deeply rooted in the teachings of the Bible, and we must address these allegations with the seriousness they deserve,” he stated.

Reports state that the holiness-preaching church has been steadfast in upholding traditional interpretations of scripture, particularly regarding moral issues.**

The RCCG’s position on homosexuality is based on passages such as Leviticus 18:22, which describes same-sex relations as an “abomination,” and 1 Corinthians 6:9-10, which warns that the “unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God.”

According to Akande, adhering to these principles is viewed as a fundamental aspect of the RCCG’s mission.

Pastor Akande has instructed the Special Assistant to ensure a thorough investigation of the allegations.

He emphasized the need for the inquiry to be conducted with confidentiality and respect for all parties involved.

Additionally, he mentioned that the church leadership has requested the investigation be completed within two weeks.

During this time, Pastor Akande has directed that AdeBello, Mayowa, and any others allegedly involved should refrain from participating in any church activities.

He clarified that the suspension is a precautionary measure pending the outcome of the investigation.

“This is a matter of integrity and adherence to our values,” he affirmed.

This is not the first instance of the RCCG facing challenges related to doctrinal adherence. As one of Nigeria’s largest Christian organizations, RCCG has consistently addressed issues it views as contrary to its values, placing a strong emphasis on discipline and strict adherence to its interpretation of biblical morality.

The results of the investigation are anticipated to influence RCCG’s approach to similar matters in the future.

The church’s management of this issue may send a message to its global membership, reaffirming RCCG’s commitment to its doctrines in the context of evolving societal norms.
