The National Orientation Agency (NOA) in Kebbi State has issued an urgent warning to communities along the banks of River Goronyo and River Niger, advising them to relocate immediately ahead of a planned release of water from nearby dams.

In a statement released on Sunday in Birnin Kebbi, the Assistant Director and Head of Media and Communication, Larai Saminu Nazo, said the controlled release was a necessary step to preserve the structural integrity of the dams. However, she warned that the measure would significantly raise water levels, putting low-lying settlements at serious risk of flooding.

“We cannot overstate the seriousness of this warning. The gradual release of water is essential for dam safety, but it will inevitably increase river levels and endanger residents in flood-prone areas,” Nazo said.

The NOA added that it is working closely with emergency management agencies and river basin authorities to ensure the warning reaches all affected communities and that evacuation support is provided where necessary.

Residents have been urged to remain alert, follow official updates, and fully cooperate with local authorities on relocation procedures. Community leaders were specifically called upon to mobilise their people and ensure timely evacuation.

“We appeal to all community leaders, residents, and stakeholders in the affected areas to take this warning with the utmost seriousness. Timely action now can avert disaster. We urge everyone to move to safer areas without delay,” Nazo added.

Kebbi State has experienced recurring floods in recent years, with farmlands, homes, and bridges destroyed. Authorities fear the coming release could intensify the risk if precautionary steps are ignored.
