National honours: Reps allege discrimination over CFR title for Speaker Abbas, demand GCON

Following the conferment of national honours on the National Assembly leadership by President Bola Tinubu, the House of Representatives has voiced its dissatisfaction, calling it discriminatory towards the Green Chamber.

A motion sponsored by all 360 lawmakers highlighted the awarding of the Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON) to Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Chief Justice of the Federation, Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun.

The lawmakers rejected Tinubu’s decision to confer the honour of Commander of the Order of the Federal Republic (CFR) on Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, arguing that both chambers of the National Assembly hold equal status and the Green Chamber should not be regarded as inferior.

They expressed disappointment that the Chief Justice, a lower-ranked official than the Speaker, received a higher honour. The House urged President Tinubu to rectify this discrepancy.

During his address on Nigeria’s 64th Independence Day Anniversary in Abuja, the President also awarded the CFR to Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin and the Commander of the Order of Niger (CON) to Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu.
