The House of Representatives has called on the Federal Government to urgently provide relief materials to victims of the recent rainstorm in Mokwa, Niger State.

The resolution followed the adoption of a motion of urgent public importance moved by Joshua Gana, who represents Lavun/Mokwa/Edati Federal Constituency, during Tuesday’s plenary.

Gana said Mokwa, a key commercial and transit centre, was hit by a severe rainstorm with strong winds that destroyed homes, caused deaths, and damaged property.

He noted that the disaster led to collapsed buildings, displacement of families, loss of belongings, and disruption of economic and academic activities at the Niger State University of Agriculture and Aquaculture in Mokwa, leaving students in difficult conditions.

He further explained that initial reports confirmed loss of lives, injuries, and hundreds of displaced residents now in urgent need of humanitarian support, while key infrastructure such as roads, electricity poles, schools, and health facilities were also affected.

According to him, the growing frequency of such extreme weather events may be linked to broader environmental and climate challenges that require coordinated government action.

Following the motion’s adoption, the House urged the National Emergency Management Agency, in collaboration with the Niger State Emergency Management Agency, to carry out a full assessment and deliver emergency relief, including food, shelter, and medical supplies.

Lawmakers also directed relevant committees on emergency response and environment to engage with appropriate agencies for swift intervention and long-term recovery.

The House further urged the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction to include the victims in ongoing intervention programmes, while also calling on the Federal Ministry of Works and Housing, alongside the Niger State Government, to assess and repair damaged infrastructure.
