The political landscape in Rivers State witnessed another major shift on Tuesday as Kingsley Chinda relinquished his role as Minority Leader of the House of Representatives amid growing speculation about his future political alignment.
The lawmaker, who represents Obio/Akpor Federal Constituency, formally notified the House of his decision through a letter read during plenary by Speaker Tajudeen Abbas.
Chinda’s exit from the opposition leadership position follows recent developments linking him to the All Progressives Congress. His appearance before an APC screening panel alongside associates of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has further fueled reports of an impending switch from the Peoples Democratic Party.
Reflecting on his time in office, Chinda expressed gratitude to lawmakers and House leadership for their cooperation throughout his tenure.
“It has been a profound honour and privilege to serve in this capacity, representing the collective interest of the minority caucus and contributing to the legislative work of the House. I am grateful for the opportunity to have worked under your leadership and alongside distinguished colleagues in advancing democratic governance and national development,” he wrote.
Despite stepping aside as Minority Leader, the Rivers lawmaker stated that he would continue to serve his constituents and contribute to parliamentary activities.
“I remain fully committed to my duties as a member of the House and will continue to support the work of the legislature in every way possible. Please accept the assurances of my high esteem and continued regards,” the letter added.
Since assuming the position in 2023, Chinda has been one of the most visible opposition figures in the House, often leading debates and presenting the stance of minority lawmakers on national issues ranging from governance and constitutional reforms to economic and electoral matters.
His resignation is expected to spark consultations among opposition parties over who will take over the influential role. Traditionally, the nomination comes from the largest opposition party in the chamber before being communicated to House leadership.
Observers say the development could have wider implications for opposition politics, particularly in Rivers State, where political loyalties continue to evolve ahead of the 2027 general elections.
With Chinda stepping down from the leadership position, attention is now focused on the next direction of the minority caucus and whether the seasoned lawmaker will formally complete his anticipated move to the APC.
