The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr. Tajudeen Abbas, has urged organized labor to shelve their planned strike. He assured that the lower chamber would step in to mediate the dispute between labor and the Federal Government.
While the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) maintains a firm stance that the Federal Government has not sufficiently tackled the issues arising from the removal of fuel subsidies, Abbas conveyed his plea to labor on Monday during the commencement of a plenary session, marking the resumption after a six-week recess.
He urged the unions to take into account the measures implemented by the government in response to the economic challenges facing the country.
He believes that initiating a strike at this point would exacerbate an already dire situation.
These remarks come as the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) contemplates an imminent strike action.
The decision to go on strike followed unsuccessful negotiations between the Federal Government and the NLC last week.
This followed a preceding two-day warning strike that commenced on Tuesday.
