The Nigerian federal government has been asked by the House of Representatives to outlaw the use of Styrofoam everywhere.

On Wednesday, the lower house adopted the resolution in response to a motion submitted by Ibrahim Shagaya.

Recall that the usage of polystyrene in Lagos State was recently outlawed by the state government.

In the motion, Shagaya stated that there are serious concerns to the environment and human health, including soil, water, and air quality pollution, associated with the usage of single-use plastics and styrofoam in Nigeria.

He added that “the chemical found in styrofoam is linked to health issues, such as cancer, vision and hearing loss, impaired memory and concentration, and nervous system effects.”

Therefore, the House decided to push for a nationwide ban on the manufacture, importation, distribution, and use of single-use plastics and styrofoam by the Federal Government of Nigeria.

Furthermore, the House requested that the Federal Government impose the ban gradually, giving companies and sectors the time to switch to more environmentally friendly products and procedures.
