Reps to investigate adoption of concrete technology for Nigerian roads

The House of Representatives will investigate the adoption of concrete technology in Nigerian road construction.

This action was prompted by a notice motion presented by a member, Honourable Khadija Ibrahim.

Within this motion, legislators expressed apprehension about various research findings indicating that employing rigid/cement concrete pavements in road construction comes with notable technical shortcomings and restrictions.

The House expresses additional concerns regarding the Minister of Works’ recent policy advocating the adoption of cement concrete pavements without comprehensive assessments of their comparative merits and drawbacks in comparison to asphalt. This stance could potentially conflict with technical guidelines, potentially resulting in contract violations and the possibility of arbitration and legal disputes, particularly during a challenging economic period.

The Minister of Works, David Umahi, has actively promoted the application of concrete technology in road construction, asserting that it offers numerous advantages, such as exceptional durability with a lifespan exceeding fifty years.
