On Tuesday, the House of Representatives decided to look into the non-delivery of the Federal Government’s 2,000 tractors, 100 combined harvesters, and other farming equipment promised under President Bola Tinubu’s renewed hope program.

In November 2023, the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security entered into a 5-year contract with a private company to supply 2,000 tractors, farming tools, and 100 combined harvesters each year, costing $70,041,733.80 and ₦2,981,739,134.30.

This initiative by the federal government aims to lower food inflation by boosting food production, reducing the need for foreign currency to buy imported equipment, and promoting local manufacturing, among other benefits.

Unfortunately, one year later, not a single tractor has been delivered.

Honorable Saba Adam, who raised the motion in the House on Tuesday, stated that the failure to deliver the tractors and equipment is a major setback to the Renewed Hope Agenda.

He also noted that this delays Nigeria’s goal of achieving food sufficiency, as two farming seasons have already been missed since the agreements were signed.

The Speaker approved the motion and directed the Committee on Agricultural Production and Services to investigate the failure to deliver the machines as outlined in the agreement and report back within four weeks.
