Resign by Friday, Kwara govt directs political appointees
AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, Governor of Kwara State, has directed that political appointees seeking elective positions in 2023 submit their resignation letters no later than Friday, April 15, 2022.
This was stated in a statement signed on Tuesday by the Secretary to the State Government, Professor Mamman Jibril.
According to the statement, Abdulrazaq stated that the recent Electoral Act 2022 signed by the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd. ), requires political appointees who want to run for office to resign before political party primaries are held.
The statement read in part, “In line with the provision of Section 84(12) of the new Electoral Act, all Kwara State Government’s appointees seeking nominations for elective offices in the forthcoming primaries are hereby directed to resign.”
It said, “All resignation letters are to be submitted to the office of the Secretary to the Kwara State Government not later than 15th April, 2022.”
Our correspondent, however, gathered that it was not yet clear if any of the 20 commissioners and other political appointees, who were appointed less than a year ago by the governor, was nursing political ambition to contest elective offices in the 2023 general election.
