Retired Judge criticises NBA over handling of petitions

Retired Justice of the Federal High Court, Justice Taiwo Taiwo, has criticised the Legal Practitioners Disciplinary Committee (LPDC) and the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) for neglecting petitions against senior and influential lawyers.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Law Weekly programme, hosted by Shola Soyele, Justice Taiwo expressed concern about the lack of accountability and synergy in the legal profession.

He attributed the prevalence of conflicting judgements to poor communication among judges and called for a system where rulings are widely circulated to ensure consistency.

On the LPDC’s effectiveness, he said, “That committee is not working as it should. Cases involving senior lawyers often don’t see the light of day. The NBA must step up and hold everyone accountable, regardless of status.”

Justice Taiwo urged the NBA to prioritise integrity over personal relationships, stating, “The NBA is not doing enough. It’s a matter of ‘you scratch my back, I scratch yours.’ This must change to protect the profession’s reputation.”
