Asari Dokubo, a former Niger Delta militant, has expressed his disagreement with the statement made by Governor Sim Fubara of Rivers State, who referred to the state as a Christian state during his inauguration on May 29, 2023.
In a tweet following his inauguration, Governor Fubara affirmed the state’s commitment to upholding Christian values. However, in a Facebook Live session, Dokubo criticized the governor, stating that he had begun his term on the wrong path.
Dokubo’s comments indicate his dissatisfaction with Governor Fubara’s characterization of Rivers State as a Christian state, suggesting a difference in opinion regarding the religious identity of the state.
He stressed that such a comment goes against the principles of inclusivity and religious freedom.
Dokubo maintained that the governor lacked the authority to unilaterally declare the state a Christian one.
“I am using this medium to advise the governor, Sim Fubara, to better retract the statement. “I want him to know that Rivers State is not and will never be a Christian state. With such a statement, I can say that the governor is starting on the wrong footing,” Dokubo said.
