After a 10-year hiatus, the Rivers State Christmas Discount Market is set to return, with the state government promising residents access to goods at substantially reduced prices.
The market will open on Thursday, 18 December, at Elekahia Stadium in Port Harcourt and will run for 10 days, concluding on 28 December.
Speaking to Channels Television at the event venue, Rivers State Commissioner for Commerce and Industry, John Otamiri, stated that the initiative aims to alleviate the financial burden on residents during the festive period.
To keep prices at a minimum, Otamiri disclosed that vendors have been granted free use of the venue.
The Commissioner reaffirmed the government’s commitment to ensuring the success of the programme and its impact on the people of Rivers State.
The initiative, which was last held a decade ago under the administration of former Governor Rotimi Amaechi, is expected to draw significant participation.
Reginald Uranta, the consultant to the Rivers State Government for the programme, outlined the market’s features. He said it would offer a wide variety of goods at affordable prices, alongside entertainment and recreational activities.
“The environment is serene, and people can unwind here. There is a Christmas Village within the Discount Market, complete with a stage for daily performances by comedians and musicians. Additionally, there will be a children’s playground,” Uranta noted.
The market’s return is expected to provide much-needed relief to residents as they prepare for the holiday season.
