Russia on Tuesday handed over the bodies of 1,000 Ukrainian soldiers, including five who died in captivity, according to Ukraine’s Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War.
In return, Ukraine repatriated the bodies of 19 Russian soldiers, Russian negotiator Vladimir Medinsky confirmed, noting the exchange followed agreements reached in Istanbul.
Ukraine said law enforcement will begin the process of identifying the remains.
The repatriation of war dead remains one of the few areas of cooperation between Moscow and Kyiv since Russia’s invasion in February 2022, with such exchanges intensifying in recent months.
