Sanwo-Olu advocates for education policy that produces self-reliant graduates

The Governor of Lagos State, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on Monday, said it had become expedient to reposition the nation’s education policy to target the delivery of employable graduates.

‘Addressing participants at the commencement of the 67th National Council on Education gathering in Lagos, the governor urged stakeholders in the education sector to collaborate in fostering the development of self-reliant youths within the state and national educational framework.

Represented by the Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Mr. Jamiu Alli-Balogun, Sanwo-Olu said, “It has become expedient to reposition the education policy by making and implementing a strategy to deliver graduate students who will blend with the labour market demands.”

He added, “The theme of the NCE meeting, ‘Addressing the challenges of policy implementation: A panacea for the achievement of Education 2030 Agenda,’ is an avenue to co-create and collaborate towards enhancing quality of teaching and learning that would provide more refined educational models and proffer lasting solutions to the challenges of policy formulation in the education sector.”

In his earlier remarks, Mr. Andrew Adejo, the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Education, urged education sector stakeholders to establish a system that provides a robust foundation for lifelong learning, utilizing education as a catalyst for national development.

Adejo, who was represented by the Director, Educational Planning and Research and Development in the ministry, Mrs Anigbogu Uju, said, “When policies that guide a nation are not implemented at the appropriate time, the consequences are backwardness, under-development, unemployment for graduates, poverty, insecurity, etc.”

“However, to tackle the challenges of policy implementation, all hands must be on deck.”
