Senate begins screening of newly appointed Service Chiefs

222

The Senate has convened as a Committee of the Whole to begin the screening of the newly appointed service chiefs, about two hours after their arrival at the National Assembly complex.

At the start of the sitting, the Senate had scheduled the consideration of the Committee on Local and Foreign Debts’ report on New External Borrowing in the 2025 Appropriation Act, Refinancing of Maturing Eurobonds, and the issuance of a debut Sovereign SUKUK in the International Capital Market. The report was presented by the committee chairman, Senator Aliyu Wamakko.

However, midway through the proceedings, a motion was raised and adopted to defer the report’s consideration to another legislative day in order to proceed with the screening exercise.

The Senate then suspended its standing rules to allow the service chiefs and the Chief of Defence Staff to enter the chamber, accompanied by the Sergeant-at-Arms.

They were joined by family members of the nominees, the Minister of Defence, Abubakar Badaru, and several other senior military officers.
