Senate demands Border camps after Taraba killings

The Senate has urged security agencies to immediately set up more security camps and intensify surveillance along the borders of Taraba, Plateau, and Bauchi states following a surge in violence and banditry.

This resolution came after Senator Isa Shuaibu Lau (Taraba North) raised a motion of urgent national importance on the recent deadly conflict between farmers and herders in Munga Lelau and Maigami villages, located in Karim Lamido Local Government Area of Taraba State.

Senator Lau stated that the crisis erupted on Friday, May 23 2025, and worsened over the weekend, claiming between 60 and 70 lives, destroying 47 houses, and displacing over 200 residents.

He explained that reprisals between the farming and herding communities triggered the violence, forcing many residents into makeshift camps in Karim Lamido and nearby Lau.

The Senate expressed deep concern over the increasing lawlessness in Karim Lamido, a region bordering Plateau and Bauchi, now considered a safe haven for bandits due to weak security infrastructure.

Senator Lau warned that the persistent attacks were devastating the local economy, displacing thousands, and threatening the wider region’s stability.

The Senate also called on the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the North-East Development Commission (NEDC) to urgently deliver humanitarian aid and relief materials to the affected communities.
