The Senate on Thursday passed the North West Development Commission bill to address the challenges facing the seven states in the geopolitical zone.
The decision came after the examination and acceptance of the report presented by the Committee on Special Duties concerning the establishment of the NWDC.
Sponsored by Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin and endorsed by 20 other legislators representing the North West geopolitical zone, the bill successfully passed its third reading.
Sen. Shehu Kaka, representing Borno Central and serving as the committee’s chairman, initiated the motion for presenting and reviewing the report.
He emphasized that the bill’s objectives are well-defined and strategically designed to foster the socio-economic advancement of the North West geopolitical zone.
Additionally, he highlighted that the establishment of the commission would facilitate closer ties between the Federal Government and the North Western states, addressing the desires and ambitions of the populace.
With the precedent set by the creation of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) and the North East Development Commission (NEDC), other geopolitical zones have begun advocating for their own commissions.
The NEDC was established in response to the devastation caused by Boko Haram insurgents in the North East. Efforts are also underway to establish the South East Development Commission.
