Senate probes Corps Member’s death in Enugu

The Senate has ordered a comprehensive investigation into the death of National Youth Service Corps member Etimbuk Daniel at the NYSC orientation camp in Enugu State and the condition of medical facilities in camps nationwide.

The probe will be conducted by the Senate Committees on Police Affairs, Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters, Ethics, Code of Conduct and Public Petitions, Youth Development, and Health, in collaboration with the Nigeria Police Force and the Department of State Services.

The resolution followed a motion of urgent public importance sponsored by Senator Aniekan Bassey, calling for an urgent review of medical services at NYSC orientation camps across the country.

Lawmakers expressed concern over Daniel’s death, describing him as a patriotic young Nigerian who had joined the national service scheme to contribute to the country.

The Senate raised concerns over reports that Daniel died from complications arising from a minor headache after allegedly experiencing delays in receiving timely and adequate medical attention at the camp clinic.

The chamber said the incident raised questions about the availability and quality of healthcare services provided to corps members during orientation exercises.

Lawmakers also warned that the death might point to broader problems within NYSC camps, including inadequate medical infrastructure, a shortage of qualified emergency personnel and the absence of effective referral procedures.

They stressed that the government had a responsibility to protect young graduates deployed away from their homes to serve the country.

The Senate subsequently observed a minute of silence in honour of the deceased corps member.

The investigation is expected to examine the circumstances surrounding Daniel’s death, alongside the state of medical facilities and emergency response arrangements at NYSC camps nationwide.
