The Senate has summoned Peer Lubasch, Managing Director of Julius Berger Nigeria PLC, for failing to respond to invitations regarding the Odukpani-Itu Highway project.
The highway, connecting Odukpani in Cross River State to Itu in Akwa Ibom State, plays a vital role in transportation and economic activities in the South-South region.
According to a motion by Senator Osita Ngwu, Julius Berger has consistently ignored requests to provide information about its involvement in the project, despite receiving over ₦18 billion in public funds.
The Senate condemned the company’s actions, labeling them as contempt of the National Assembly and a disregard for constitutional authority.
Consequently, the Senate has invoked its powers to issue a warrant of arrest to ensure the attendance of Julius Berger’s Managing Director at the rescheduled hearing.
Additionally, the Senate has initiated a separate investigation into recent demolitions in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). An investigative committee has been established to review the situation and report back to the chamber.
The committee will summon the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, to provide an explanation for the demolitions that have displaced numerous residents in the Federal Capital Territory.
The motion, introduced by Senator Ireti Kingibe representing the FCT Senatorial District, highlighted concerns about the unlawful demolition of structures in the capital.
Senator Kingibe urged an immediate halt to further demolitions.
In response, the Senate resolved to establish an investigative committee to examine the issue and submit its findings within a stipulated timeframe.
