Senate summons NDLEA over allegation against senator

The Senate has summoned General Buba Marwa, Chairman of the National Drugs Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), to appear before it regarding allegations against Deputy Senate Leader Senator Oyelola Ashiru of the APC from Kwara South.

A six-member panel has been established to invite all parties involved in the NDLEA’s accusations, which claim that Senator Ashiru made derogatory comments about the agency last week due to its failure to prevent the arrest and trial of individuals allegedly involved in drug abuse at his residence.

The panel is chaired by Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe of the APGA from Abia South and includes Senators Kaka Shehu (APC, Borno Central), Ede Dafinone (APC, Delta Central), Ireti Kingibe (LP, FCT), Afolabi Shauibu (APC, Ogun Central), and Lawal Usman (PDP, Kaduna Central).

The Senate’s resolutions on Tuesday followed a point of order raised by Senator Ashiru.

Under Order 42 of the Senate Standing Order, Ashiru explained how the backlash from his comments during a debate on an NDLEA bill has impacted his integrity, asserting that he neither consumes alcohol nor carbonated drinks, except for water. He emphasized the need to take the matter seriously.

The Senate addressed the issue after a closed-door session that began at 11:49 a.m. and concluded at 1:25 p.m.
