The Senate has scheduled a special session for Wednesday to honour former President Muhammadu Buhari.
The session will reflect on Buhari’s legacy and his contributions to Nigeria’s national development, following his recent death.
Last week, the Federal Executive Council (FEC) also held a tribute in his honour. During the event, President Bola Tinubu praised Buhari for leading with restraint, governing with dignity, and carrying the weight of leadership without complaint.
Buhari passed away in London on 13th July after a prolonged and undisclosed illness. He was buried in Daura, Katsina State, in a ceremony attended by dignitaries from within and outside the country.
The former president was Nigeria’s second-longest-serving leader. Born in Katsina, he served as President from 2015 to 2023 and previously led the country as Head of State between 1983 and 1985.
No Recommendation on State Creation
Meanwhile, the Senate has urged the public to disregard unverified reports circulating on social media, which claim the Senate Committee on Constitution Review has recommended the creation of new states.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio issued the clarification after Senator Abdul Ningi raised concerns about the misleading reports.
Akpabio explained that while over 42 state creation proposals had been submitted, none had undergone full deliberation. He stressed that the process of creating a new state is complex and has not yet been completed in any case.
He advised citizens to rely only on official communication from the National Assembly regarding constitutional matters.
