Seven things to do to avoid stampede at your event
Stampede represent a grave safety concern at large gatherings in the absence of adequate measures.
With the recent stampedes that occurred in Ibadan, Abuja, and Anambra, we must know how to avoid a stampede at any of our events or gatherings to avoid deaths.
Be it a concert, festival, sporting event, or any other large gathering; crowd management must be emphasized to prevent disorderly conduct and ensure everyone’s safety.
Here are seven ways to avoid stampedes at your event:
Implement Clear Communication Channels
In the course of an event, it is very important to keep the attendees informed and composed. Employ clear and loud announcements to transmit any changes in schedule, emergency procedures or safety precautions. Furthermore, digital signage and social media updates could be useful in keeping people inform in real time. Emergencies can be handled if there is a public address system or loudspeakers that will aid in directing the people to safer areas or in evacuating them.
Plan for Adequate Crowd Control
This is crucial since it helps in organizing the multitude/ large numbers/ crowds. This can be done by using signs and barricades to direct people where they are supposed to entry or exit, or walk along the road. The entrance should be broad enough to let the expected crowd pass without any hitches. Further, use of barriers or fencing makes it easier for you to control pedestrians thus making them move in an orderly and controlled manner.
Use Trained Security Personnel
It is critical to have trained security staff available for the purpose of crowd safety. These people must possess good knowledge of crowd management techniques and also be able to identify early signs of overcrowding or panic. Security personnel should be deployed in key places like entrances, exits, and high traffic areas so that they can be in control and take quick actions during emergency situations.
Control the Flow of People
A clear-defined entry and exit strategy would avoid mingling in one zone and minimize the over-crowded risk. Moreover, the allowed number of people in specific zones at particular moments would be controlled; thus, it could be more manageable. Finally, staggered entry times or a ticketing system with assigned entry times would eliminate congestion and distribute the guests better throughout the venue.
Monitor and Regulate Capacity
Knowing and adhering to your venue’s capacity is critical in preventing an imminent dangerous buildup of people. Overcrowding can develop into a life-threatening situation very quickly, particularly with the confinement of many individuals within small areas. Employ technological innovations such as crowd-monitoring systems to track the number of attendees and ensure that the venue does not exceed its maximum capacity at any given time.
Create Escape Routes and Emergency Procedures
Design the event layout considering emergency exits and escape routes. Ensure that these are highlighted and accessible so as to avoid any panic in case of an incident. Emergency protocols should be established with the designated exits for fast evacuation along with a clear plan of action for personnel and security to follow. Conduct evacuation drills prior to the event so that everyone knows their roles in an emergency.
Prepare for Unexpected Situations
Panic can be caused by unforeseen events like sudden changes in weather, technical malfunctions, or unexpected deviations in crowd behavior. Carry contingency plans for emergencies. Medical personnel should be readily available along with first-aid stations to address any accidents or health emergencies. Moreover, the security team must also be prepared to respond quickly and effectively in such situations to avoid the further escalation of a stampede.
