The supporters of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Social Democratic Party (SDP) clashed in a gun duel in Idah Local Government Area of Kogi State ahead of the state’s governorship election, injuring many.
The confrontation occurred on Wednesday, resulting in vehicle damage and several people, including a police officer, suffering gunshot injuries.
In a statement issued on Thursday, SP William Aya, the spokesperson for the Kogi State Police Command, confirmed the incident. He reported, “The Commissioner of Police, CP Bethrand Onuoha has ordered an investigation into the incident.
Aya noted that the CP while denouncing the incident, emphasized that the Deputy Commissioner of Police overseeing the Criminal Investigation Department has been directed to initiate inquiries.
“The CP reiterates the Command’s unwavering commitment to continue to engage the critical stakeholders in Election Security Management to ensure a secure environment for the electoral process.
”Command is ever determined in providing a level playing ground for all Political Parties as they embark on campaigns, rallies, procession among others,” the statement said.
The Police Command additionally cautioned potential disruptors in anticipation of the Kogi State governorship election scheduled for November 11.
