Six people were rescued on Wednesday evening after a two-storey building collapsed at 4 Modupeola Street, Mangoro Bus Stop, Alimosho Local Government Area of Lagos State, leaving one man trapped and injured.

The incident happened around 6 p.m., though the cause of the collapse is yet to be identified. Officials of the Lagos State Emergency Management Authority (LASEMA) and other first responders arrived shortly after the collapse to assist with the rescue operation.

Lagos State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso, confirmed the incident in a statement on his Instagram page.

“The LASEMA and other first responders got to the scene in good time and rescued a trapped victim and five others from the rubble,” Omotoso said.

The trapped victim, a 44-year-old resident of 10 Olabode Street, Alimosho, sustained fractures and bruises. He was taken by the Lagos State Ambulance Service to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) Surgical Emergency unit.

“He arrived at the hospital in a stable condition and was immediately admitted for further treatment,” Omotoso added.

The other five rescued individuals were taken to a private hospital in the area for medical evaluation and care. Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the collapse.

This latest incident comes amid rising concerns over building safety in Lagos. In May, three family members died in Ikorodu when an uncompleted two-storey building gave way, while five others were killed in a separate collapse at Ojodu Berger. More recently, in July, four people narrowly escaped death when a three-storey building collapsed along Adeniji-Adele Road in Isale Eko.

Experts have continued to attribute the recurring tragedies to poor enforcement of building standards, warning of further collapses unless regulations are strictly implemented.

“The cause of the incident, which occurred around 6 p.m., was not immediately known,” Omotoso noted. “Government officials have launched a probe into the incident.”

Residents and emergency officials described the rescue as well-coordinated, with teams working swiftly to ensure the safety of trapped victims and minimize further risks.
