Starting January 8, 2024, Americans planning to visit the United Kingdom (UK) will need to complete an additional step before entering the country.

According to the U.S. State Department, the U.K. will implement an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) for most U.S. citizens traveling to or transiting through the country.

Originally announced in early 2023, the ETA system aims to create a “more streamlined, digital immigration process that is faster and more secure for the millions passing through the U.K. border annually,” as stated on the U.K. Home Office’s website. While initially scheduled to launch at the end of 2023, its introduction was delayed.

The U.K. joins other nations, including the U.S., Canada, Australia, and soon the European Union, in adopting such authorization systems.

Though it will require some additional planning and a small fee, the U.K. Home Office assures that the ETA application process will be “quick and simple.”
