Sokoto State Governor, Ahmed Aliyu, has visited the two communities struck by a military airstrike on Wednesday, which claimed the lives of at least 10 people and left several others injured.

Despite the challenging terrain, the governor joined residents for funeral prayers for the deceased and expressed solidarity with the affected families. He announced a donation of ₦20 million to support those impacted by the tragic incident.

Governor Aliyu was accompanied by All Progressives Congress (APC) leader Senator Aliyu Wamakko and Minister of Labour and Employment Muhammadu Maigari Dingyadi during the visit.

Governor Calls for Investigation

Speaking at the scene, the governor described the incident as “unfortunate” and attributed it to a mistake during a military operation aimed at combating armed criminal groups in the state.

“The military jets were on a mission to eliminate criminal elements terrorising the state but mistakenly bombed innocent residents of this community,” he said.

Governor Aliyu highlighted the military’s track record of successfully targeting criminal hideouts in the past and called for a thorough investigation to prevent a recurrence of such errors. He prayed for Almighty Allah to forgive the deceased and grant their families strength to bear the loss.

Government Support for Victims

In addition to the governor’s donation, the Secretary to the State Government, Muhammad Bello Sifawa, announced further support, including 100 bags of assorted foodstuffs for the families of the deceased.

The state government also pledged to cover the medical expenses of those hospitalised due to injuries sustained in the airstrike.

The tragic incident has prompted calls for improved precision in military operations to avoid civilian casualties, with the governor reaffirming his commitment to ensuring justice and assistance for the affected communities.
