The Sokoto State Commissioner for Solid Minerals Development, Yusuf Muhammad Maccido, has warned that the state will not tolerate illegal mining activities and has vowed to enforce strict compliance with mining regulations.

Maccido issued the warning during an assessment visit to Lambara town in Shagari Local Council, where a company was discovered to have commenced mining operations without the required authorisation from the state government.

“No entity or individual has the right to engage in mining activities without the explicit consent and approval of the Ministry of Solid Minerals Development,” Maccido said, reiterating the ministry’s mandate to oversee all mining operations in Sokoto State.

He added, “The ministry will ensure that due process is followed at all times. We are committed to reviving and improving mining activities in the state, but this must be done in accordance with the law.”

The commissioner highlighted Governor Ahmad Aliyu’s efforts to boost the mining sector and foster partnerships with organisations willing to operate within legal frameworks.

Commending the commissioner’s swift intervention, the Local Council Chairman, Maidawa Kajiji, confirmed that the company had been ordered to halt its operations until proper clearance was obtained. He praised the move, saying it would protect community resources and ensure sustainable development.

Accompanied by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Alhaji Lawali Sada, and other officials, Maccido’s visit demonstrated the state government’s commitment to enforcing mining regulations and promoting responsible practices.

The ministry assured that appropriate action will be taken against any individual or organisation found violating the law, signalling a renewed focus by the Sokoto State government to harness its mineral resources transparently and responsibly.
