Governor Bello Matawalle of Zamfara on Tuesday donated N50 million to Sokoto state government and traders affected by fire outbreak that destroyed some 9,600 shops at the Shehu Shagari Modern Market in the state.
Matawalle, who commiserated with Gov. Aminu Tambuwal and Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III, over the incident, also inspected the burnt portions.
He described the incident as pathetic, noting that Zamfara and Sokoto states were of the same coin, hence share the responsibility of whatever happens to the two states.
”I am here on behalf of myself, government and people of Zamfara state to commiserate with Gov. Aminu Tambuwal and Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III, on the incident,” he stated.
He described the disaster as a great loss not only to Sokoto state, but Nigeria and the West Africa Sub-region as a whole.
He prayed Allah to prevent future re-occurence and compensate the victims to recuperate soon.
Responding, Gov. Tambuwal thanked Matawalle for the visit along with the donation.
The fire outbreak occurred on Jan. 19, and destroyed about 9,600 shops at Shehu Shagari Modern Market, popularly called New Market.
