A military officer has shot and killed Halliru Liman, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Wasagu Division in Kebbi State, according to police reports.
Liman was fatally shot at a checkpoint in Zamfara State on Wednesday morning, as confirmed by Yazid Abubakar, a police spokesperson in Kebbi State, who described the killing as “senseless.”
“SP Liman was brutally murdered by military personnel led by an officer named Hassan, who is attached to OPHD Sector 6 in the Dan Marke area of Bukkuyum, Zamfara State,” Abubakar stated. “The circumstances surrounding this heinous crime are alarming and unacceptable.”
According to Abubakar, SP Liman was en route to a monthly conference in Birnin Kebbi when he was stopped by military personnel, despite clearly identifying himself as a police officer. “In a shocking display of aggression, Hassan aimed his weapon at SP Liman and shot him in the head, killing him instantly,” Abubakar recounted.
The police condemned the unprovoked attack, calling for a thorough investigation into the incident. “The military’s actions are a blatant violation of the rules of engagement and the principles of inter-agency cooperation,” the police statement said. “We urge the relevant authorities to take immediate action to address this egregious incident and ensure that those responsible are held accountable.”
The police extended their condolences to Liman’s family and friends, assuring them that they would pursue justice for the fallen officer.
As of the time of reporting, the Nigerian Army has not commented on the allegations.
