Sporting Lagos, a newly emerged team in the Naija Super Eight tournament, achieved a remarkable triumph by winning the ultimate prize.
In a thrilling finale, they emerged victorious over Remo Stars with a 4-2 score in a penalty shoot-out. After regular time ended in a 1-1 draw, the teams proceeded directly to the shoot-out.
Sporting Lagos, recently promoted to the Nigerian Premier Football League (NPFL), showcased their precision from the penalty spot, outperforming their opponents.
Initially taking the lead in the 54th minute, it seemed that Sporting Lagos was on track to claim their first championship in only their second year in Nigerian football.
However, Remo Stars managed to equalize with a goal from Adams Olamilekan, just minutes before the end of the game.
Prior to the equalizer, Remo Stars experienced a disheartening turn of events when the referee inexplicably disallowed what appeared to be a legitimate goal by Olamilekan, leading to a tense and potentially chaotic situation.
However, the organizers managed to restore order and diffuse the volatile atmosphere.
With no further goals scored during the additional eight minutes of added time, the teams resorted to a penalty shootout to determine the victor of the competition.
Sporting Lagos successfully converted four of their penalty kicks, whereas Remo Stars only managed to score two, ultimately granting the trophy to the Lagos-based team.
In addition to the championship title, Sporting Lagos also secured the N25 million prize money.
