Sports Minister declares 8th national youth games open in Asaba

The Minister of Sports Development, John Enoh, has highlighted the National Youth Games as a crucial platform for revitalizing Nigeria’s sports industry.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the 8th edition of the Games, held at the Stephen Keshi Stadium in Asaba, Delta State, Enoh underscored the importance of grassroots sports in fostering young talent and strengthening Nigeria’s global standing in sports.

The event, which gathered young athletes and officials from across the country, saw the Minister emphasize the critical role grassroots sports play in developing future champions and promoting national unity. He reaffirmed that this initiative is key to building a robust sports sector and identifying promising talents.

“In today’s world, sports play a crucial role in creating wealth, promoting peace, fostering national unity, and facilitating international diplomacy. This is why the current administration, under the leadership of His Excellency, Bola Ahmed Tinubu (GCFR), is committed to repositioning the sector for optimal performance in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda.”

Reflecting on the lessons learned from the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games, Enoh called for a renewed focus on grassroots development.

He stressed the need for a framework that goes beyond talent identification, to one that ensures comprehensive nurturing from the grassroots to elite levels of competition.

The minister further commended the efforts of Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, for his continued support of grassroots sports, particularly at a time when hosting such a national event is challenging.

With 4,585 athletes and 1,159 officials cleared to participate— the highest number ever recorded for the National Youth Games— this edition promises to be historic.

Enoh also expressed his appreciation to the Governors of the participating states and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory for their unwavering support and sponsorship of their state delegations.

He called on athletes and officials to demonstrate the spirit of fair play, urging them to compete cleanly and abide by the rules.

“This year’s edition of the National Youth Games presents yet another opportunity to initiate the process of athlete development for the next generation of Olympic and Paralympic champions and the setting of world records,” he added.
