The Joint Action Committee of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Universities (NASU) has threatened to go on an indefinite strike if their outstanding salaries are not paid within three weeks.
This ultimatum was delivered in a statement jointly signed by SSANU President, Mohammed Ibrahim, and NASU General Secretary, Prince Peters Adeyemi, which was obtained by Channels Television on Wednesday.
The unions noted that a 10-day grace period given to the Federal Government to settle the four months of unpaid salaries for university staff expired on July 26, 2024.
They have now issued a new three-week ultimatum, starting from Tuesday, September 17, warning that universities and inter-university centers will be shut down if the government fails to meet their demands within this period.
SSANU and NASU are calling for the payment of the four months’ withheld salaries, improved remuneration, earned allowances, and the implementation of the 2009 agreement with the Federal Government.
The unions accused the government of failing to act within the initial six-week ultimatum issued in July.
