Street sweepers protest over unpaid stipends in Ondo

Street sweepers in Ondo State held a peaceful demonstration due to the non-payment of their stipends for a period of four months.

A group of predominantly female street sweepers took to the Ministry of Environment premises in protest, threatening to cease work unless their stipends, unpaid for four months, were settled.

Employed by ZL Global Alliances, a private firm responsible for waste management and recycling in Ondo State, the demonstrators, who were formerly with Ondo State Waste Management since 2019, voiced their grievances.

Mrs. Oluwaseun Ogunniyi, representing the demonstrators, disclosed that they received a monthly payment of N10,000 and had not been compensated for the past four months.

In response, Mr. Tobi Benjamin, the Deputy General Manager of the company, issued a statement attributing the delay to logistical challenges, clarifying that the street sweepers would receive their outstanding payment next week.
