Students of tertiary institutions on Tuesday staged a protest at the Ogun State Police Command over an alleged killing of their colleague by a yet-to-be-identified hit-and-run driver.

The victim, Idowu Pelumi David, was a student at the state-owned Gateway Polytechnic and was reportedly killed in front of the NYSC Camp on Monday, July 8, 2024.

Presenting a protest letter to the police authorities, the students demanded justice for their deceased colleague and called for the culprit to be brought to justice.

Armed with placards bearing various inscriptions, the students blocked the road, causing a gridlock, and alleged that a staff member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) was responsible for the death of their colleague.

The students, who were members of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), said, “This peaceful protest is to express our sadness and grievance over the senseless crushing to death of Idowu Pelumi David, a National Diploma 1 Public Administration student of the Gateway Polytechnic, Ayepe Annex, by a staff of the National Youth Service Corps in the state.”

They alleged a coverup in the matter and enjoined police authorities in the state to bring the culprit to book.

The Commissioner of Police in the state, Abiodun Alamutu, assured the protesting students that investigation has commenced for possible identification and prosecution of the culprit. The police commissioner was represented by his assistant on operations Manger Fergus.
