The Nigeria Labour Congress has started an urgent National Executive Council meeting in response to the increase in the pump price of Premium Motor Spirit.

Executive members of the affiliated unions of the congress are in attendance at the meeting, which began a few minutes after 12 o’clock in the afternoon.

Following the impasse-filled meeting with the Federal Government’s officials, the NLC is likely to announce its final choice to the public.

According to earlier reports, President Bola Tinubu abruptly stated “subsidy is gone” during his inaugural speech on Monday, May 29,2023.

Nevertheless, the president’s image makers argued that the new president was misquoted by several media outlets in words made public by the State House.

With certain filling stations throughout the nation pegging the pump price of the Premium Motor Spirit to as high as N600 per litre as a result of Tinubu’s pronouncement, there was an uptick in panic buying.

In a similar vein, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited on Wednesday unveiled a new PMS tariff.

The NNPCL and Tinubu’s action were criticised by organised labour as “a joke taken too far” by Trade Union Congress and the Nigeria Labour Congress.

According to President Tinubu, the fuel subsidy will be used to promote other sectors if it is removed.
