The foreign minister of Pakistan has announced that 700 citizens have been evacuated to their country for safety from Sudan where protracted violence has left hundreds dead and a wave of foreigners fleeing the area.
“Today, another convoy carrying 211 Pakistanis dispatched from Khartoum has arrived in Port Sudan,” Bilawal Bhutto Zardari said in a statement.
“With the latest convoy, the total number of Pakistanis who have been evacuated to safety has reached 700.”
He tweeted earlier this week that Pakistanis were being lodged close to the port before continuing their journey.
Around 1,500 Pakistanis, according to the ministry, were in Sudan, and their security and safety was being strictly watched.
On Tuesday, sporadic shooting broke out in the Sudanese capital Khartoum despite a US-mediated agreement between the warring parties to a 72-hour ceasefire to open the door for negotiations on a longer-term truce.
According to UN organisations, at least 427 people have died and more than 3,700 have been injured. Over 4,000 people have left the nation in evacuations that were sponsored by foreign governments and started on Saturday.
