Renowned activist Aisha Yesufu has voiced her disapproval of the Supreme Court’s ruling that upheld Governor Abdullahi Sule’s election victory in Nasarawa State.
On Friday, the highest court rejected a petition challenging the election filed by the Peoples Democratic Party and its candidate, Emmanuel Ombugadu.
Responding on X, Yesufu characterized the judgment as “robbery” and labeled it a “coup” against the wishes of the Nasarawa people.
“Nasarawa people were robbed of their mandate. This is a coup on the people. They chose who they wanted and were denied their mandate,” she wrote.
Yesufu described the ruling as “another sad day for democracy in Nigeria.”
In a unanimous decision, the Supreme Court declared that the petition from the PDP lacked sufficient evidence to justify overturning the election.
Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun emphasized that the allegations made by the PDP were not substantiated.
However, Yesufu maintained that the judgment undermined the preferences of Nasarawa citizens who cast their votes for a change.
She accused the Supreme Court of depriving the people of their elected governor in Ombugadu.
