The Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum and Governor of Kwara State, Abdulrahman AbdulRazaq, stated that the Supreme Court verdict on local government financial autonomy alleviates the burden on governors.
He made these remarks at the State House in Abuja on Friday, accompanied by his counterparts from Bauchi and Imo States, Bala Mohammed and Hope Uzodimma, respectively.
“We welcome the ruling of the Supreme Court. Compliance is a given, and our Attorney Generals have applied for the enrolment order, which we will study carefully. By and large, governors are pleased with the devolution of power regarding local government autonomy,” said the governor.
“It alleviates the burden on governors. Our citizens are often unaware of how much states spend in bailing out local governments, and that is the issue at hand.”
Governor AbdulRazaq mentioned that the Nigeria Governors’ Forum would convene next Wednesday to formulate a resolution on the matter.
The Kwara governor also commented on President Bola Tinubu’s meeting with labour leaders regarding the new minimum wage.
“As you know, the tripartite committee has met and submitted its report. The adjustment of figures is the president’s prerogative, which he will also transmit to the National Assembly for thorough debate before adoption,” the governor stated.
