A 40-year-old man, suspected to be a cultist, was shot dead in Owo, the headquarters of Owo Local Government Area in Ondo State, on Sunday, 19 January 2025.
The Ondo State Police Command spokesperson, CSP Funmilayo Odunlami, confirmed the incident in a statement, revealing that the man had been on the police wanted list.
According to Odunlami, the deceased was implicated in the EndSARS protests, during which he allegedly attacked a police station, stealing an AK-47 rifle and a bulletproof vest. He was also reportedly involved in the killing of a resident in the state.
Two masked gunmen carried out the fatal attack. The victim’s remains have been deposited at a hospital morgue in Owo, while police efforts are underway to apprehend the culprits.
The incident follows a dusk-to-dawn curfew imposed in Owo after a violent clash between two cult groups two weeks ago, which claimed four lives.
