Five teenagers have gone on trial in Sweden over the alleged attempted murder of Iranian dissident researcher Arvin Khoshnood.

The case, being heard behind closed doors at the Gothenburg District Court, opened with prosecutors outlining charges against the youths, aged between 15 and 17. Three are accused of attempted murder, while the others face charges of complicity.

According to prosecutors, the incident occurred on September 2, 2025, when one of the teenagers—armed with a knife—approached Khoshnood’s home in Malmo and rang the doorbell. His wife answered, but Khoshnood, sensing danger, instructed her to shut the door and took a photograph of the suspect, which later aided investigators.

Khoshnood was unharmed but has since been living in hiding due to security concerns. His lawyer, Sylvia Strid, said the family had been under significant pressure but is now receiving protection and support.

Prosecutors allege the teenager was recruited via messaging apps and promised payment to carry out the killing. They claim other suspects—and an unidentified mastermind—provided instructions, supplied the weapon, and negotiated the terms of the attack.

Describing the case, prosecutor Per-Erik Rinsell said it reflects “crime as a service”, where minors are recruited by organised networks to commit violent acts.

Khoshnood believes the plot was linked to Foxtrot, a major gang reportedly led by Rawa Majid, who is alleged to have ties to Iranian authorities.

The researcher is known for supporting Reza Pahlavi, son of Iran’s last Shah, and frequently appears in Swedish media as an analyst on Iranian affairs.

Sweden’s security service, Sapo, has identified Iran as a significant security concern, accusing it of using criminal gangs to target opposition figures and foreign interests—claims Tehran has denied.

One of the defendants is also accused of plotting to bomb the headquarters of Aimpoint in Malmo, while several face additional charges linked to a separate attempted murder in Uddevalla.
