Organised labour in Taraba State has vowed not to yield to alleged threats from state government representatives to call off its planned indefinite strike.
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) insisted the strike would begin at midnight.
At a press briefing, NLC Chairman Peter Jediel and TUC Chairman Sule Abasu said the action was in response to alleged irregularities in the state’s biometric data capture exercise, which excluded some workers and labelled them as ghost workers.
They accused the biometric committee of illegal practices and criticised the state government for ignoring an earlier ultimatum.
“Based on our resolutions held today, 10 August 2025, at the NLC Secretariat by 3:00 pm, we resolved that the strike will commence by midnight tomorrow, 11 August 2025.
“This decision follows the government’s failure to address the irregularities in the biometrics exercise, which wrongly excluded some workers and classified them as ghost workers.
“In the labour movement, threats do not deter us. We have declared this strike for the welfare of our members,” Jediel said.
The unions had earlier stated that their decision followed a resolution reached at a Joint State Administrative Council meeting on 6 August.
In a joint statement signed by both leaders, they reiterated that the strike was a response to the biometric exercise’s alleged flaws, which they claim have adversely affected workers.
They again faulted the state government for failing to address their concerns before the ultimatum expired.
