Thousands of youths from the 19 Northern States held a solidarity rally today at the entrance of the National Assembly in support of the Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau Jibrin, whom they described as the “Sardauna of our era.”
They stated that the peaceful rally was organized to caution those criticizing Senator Barau following the Senate’s resolution last Wednesday to allow tax reform experts to present insights on the Tax Reform Bills during a plenary session.
During that session, Barau advocated for experts, including Taiwo Oyedele, chairman of the Presidential Committee on Tax Reform, to brief senators and the public on the proposed tax reforms.
Carrying banners with various inscriptions including: “Senator Barau: The Sardauna of our era”,” Senator Barau is the new leader of the North”, ” Stop attacking Senator Barau”, ” Leave Senator Barau alone”, ” Senator Barau: The pro-masses lawmaker,” they said Barau remains the best Senator in the North, given his sponsorship of the North West Development Commission (NWDC) bill.
Comrade Tijjani Kabiru Mohammed, a former President of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), clarified that the Deputy President of the Senate has neither endorsed nor opposed the Tax Reform Bills. Instead, he advocated for raising awareness and educating Nigerians about the reforms.
