Team Nigeria wins gold award at 2026 Spelling Bee World Cup in China

Team Nigeria has won the gold award in the middle school group category at the 2026 Spelling Bee World Cup held in Shanghai, China.

The four-member team comprising Adeolu Oluwadamilola Oreofe, Abdurrahman Yusuf, Chinedu Okediachi, and Maryam Yusuf competed against participants from Asia, Africa, the United States, China, and Canada at the competition, held from July 14 to 19.

Other African countries represented at the global event included Ethiopia, Côte d’Ivoire, Malawi, South Africa, and Zimbabwe.

The Nigeria Spelling Bee announced the achievement on its official Facebook page on Sunday.

“Team Nigeria has won the Gold Award in the Middle School Group Category at the 2026 Spelling Bee World Cup in Shanghai, China,” the post reads.

Before the competition, organisers had described the participants as “brilliant, articulate and exceptional”.

They described Nigeria’s feat as a remarkable milestone reflecting unwavering dedication, resilience, and academic excellence.

The organisers added that the team’s journey to the global stage began at the Nigeria Spelling Bee before progressing to the African Spelling Bee Championship in Harare, Zimbabwe.

Meanwhile, the management of Ar-Raheem International College announced that two of its students were part of the winning team at the global competition.
