On Friday, gunshots were heard along the Opic axis of the Lagos-Ibadan expressway after a police officer allegedly assaulted an Okada rider for breaking traffic rules.

As a result, many Okada riders set fire to tyres on the expressway, disrupting traffic.

A number of police and navy officials were also present to maintain order, while ensuring free flow of traffic along the expressway.

Police officers on the scene, led by Divisional Police Officer Abdul Fattah O., declined to comment.

However, multiple eyewitnesses told media that a police officer had assaulted an Okada rider for flouting traffic rules, discharging firearms in the process and injuring at least one person.

The injured individual was rushed to the hospital, eyewitnesses said.

As of 1pm, calm had returned to the scene and the traffic eased up.
