Terence Stamp, iconic ‘Superman’ villain, dies at 87

Terence Stamp, veteran actor renowned for portraying the villain in the 1978 film Superman, has passed away at the age of 87.

In a statement to Reuters, his family confirmed that he died on Sunday morning, noting that they find comfort in the legacy he left behind through his remarkable career.

The cause of his death was not disclosed.

“He leaves behind an extraordinary body of work, both as an actor and as a writer, that will continue to touch and inspire people for years to come. We ask for privacy at this sad time,” the family’s statement read in part.

Tributes have since poured in from fans and colleagues across social media.

Sarah Douglas, his Superman co-star, honored him in an Instagram post, describing him as “beyond gorgeous and talented” and recalling how much she learned from him. She expressed condolences to those who loved him, calling his death a “great loss.”

“So saddened to learn that Terence has left us. He was beyond gorgeous and talented and I learnt so very much from him,” she wrote.
“What a start to my career to have spent so many months in his company. My love and heartfelt condolences to all who cared for him. What a loss.”

Stamp began his career in 1960 with a Wolf Mankowitz production, after training on a scholarship at London’s Webber Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art.

His film debut in Billy Budd (1962) earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor and a BAFTA nomination for Best Newcomer.

He rose to global prominence playing General Zod in Superman (1978) and Superman II (1980).

Over six decades, Stamp appeared in a wide range of acclaimed films, including The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, Far From the Madding Crowd, and Valkyrie. His performances earned him numerous accolades, such as a Golden Globe, a Cannes Film Festival Award, and a Silver Bear.

Beyond his acting, Stamp was admired for his striking looks and impeccable fashion. In 1995, Empire magazine ranked him among the 100 Sexiest Film Stars of All Time.
