The Minister of Defence, retired Gen. Christopher Musa, has assured the nation that the military remains in firm control of the security situation despite a recent uptick in terrorist and bandit attacks in the Northeast.

Speaking in Abuja on Wednesday following a high-level strategy session with service chiefs, Musa emphasized that the Armed Forces are continuously refining their operations to protect national territory and eliminate criminal threats.

During the meeting, which was called to assess ongoing efforts across various theaters of operation, the Minister noted that while the military has faced some losses, the insurgents are being hit much harder. “We know we have suffered some casualties, but I can tell you the terrorists and bandits are taking more,” Musa stated, adding that security forces are successfully neutralizing enemy commanders and dismantling their strategic assets.

The Minister also addressed the role of the public and the media in the fight against insurgency, warning that the spread of “false information” on social media can severely undermine troop morale.

Urged Nigerians to verify security reports with official military channels rather than relying on unverified online sources. Furthermore, he appealed to media organizations to avoid becoming tools for “terrorist propaganda” by circulating videos or images produced by criminal groups, which only serve to embolden the enemy.

Musa concluded by reiterating that tackling insecurity requires a “whole-of-government and society approach,” urging citizens to report suspicious activities and warning that those aiding terrorists would be treated as accomplices.

He also expressed gratitude to President Bola Tinubu for his steadfast support and congratulated the newly confirmed Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, promising a era of strong inter-agency collaboration to ensure a safer Nigeria.
