A fatal road accident on Tuesday resulted in the death of a woman after two Toyota Sienna vehicles crashed head-on along the Third Mainland Bridge.

The collision happened at the Ilaje axis heading toward Iyana Oworo and involved vehicles with registration numbers LSR 809 GV and LSR 695 HM.

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), which confirmed the incident, described the crash as severe and linked it to reckless driving, especially overspeeding.

LASTMA spokesperson, Taofeek Adebayo, revealed that an adult woman, identified as a mother, died instantly, while her 30-year-old daughter, who was in the same vehicle, survived.

According to him, “The severity of the impact underscores the grave consequences of reckless driving behaviours, particularly excessive speeding.”

He further disclosed that one of the drivers escaped immediately after the crash, while the other was caught by LASTMA officials.

“However, the second driver was promptly apprehended by LASTMA personnel and subsequently handed over to the police to facilitate thorough investigation and possible prosecution in accordance with the law,” he stated.

Adebayo also noted that LASTMA officials on routine patrol quickly implemented traffic control measures to avoid further disruption on the busy bridge.

“Safety cones were strategically deployed to cordon off the accident scene and ensure the protection of other road users.
“Personnel from the Oworonsoki Police Division equally responded expeditiously to the emergency call and were fully engaged at the scene to carry out comprehensive documentation and initiate necessary statutory procedures,” he added.

He mentioned that the deceased’s body has been removed, while traffic officers and other emergency responders remained on site to manage traffic and prevent additional incidents.

Reacting to the situation, LASTMA General Manager Olalekan Bakare-Oki repeated the agency’s warning against unsafe driving practices.

He said, “Motorists must eschew reckless driving, particularly excessive speeding, which remains a predominant cause of fatal road accidents.”
